George Gershwin was born in Brooklyn, New York to Ukrainian Jewish immigrants on September 26, 1898. He was named Jacob Gershowitz at birth. The Gershwin parents had bought a piano for George’s older brother, Ira. He learned the instrument quickly, so his parents were happy to help him find a suitable professional for a piano teacher.

The search for a piano teacher for young George Gershwin took nearly two years. He finally settled on Charles Hambitzer, who influenced Gershwin’s musical life immensely. He taught Gershwin formal techniques and formal European music. Gershwin would attend classical music performances with Hambitzer, and he was often able to reproduce the melodies on the piano when he would return home. Hambitzer acted as Gershwin’s mentor until the time of his death in 1918.

At 15, Gershwin dropped out of school to become a song plugger for Jerome H. Remick and Company, a firm from New York City’s famed Tin Pan Alley. The position earned him $15 a week, but more importantly, it positioned him well in the music industry.

By 1916, Gershwin published his first song, entitled, "When You Want ‘Em, You Can’t Get ‘Em, When You’ve Got ‘Em, You Don’t Want Em." He was 17 years old.

He followed up his release in 1916 with a 1917 release of "Rialto Ripples," which was a commercial success. In 1918, he released "Swanee." In 1924, Gershwin began his foray into musicals, a pursuit that would make him forever famous. He penned "Lady Be Good" and "Fascinating Rhythm" that year.

Follow-up musicals in subsequent years included "Oh Kay," "Funny Face," "Strike Up the Band," "Show Girl," "Girl Crazy," "I Got Rhythm," "Porgy and Bess" and "Of Thee I Sing." The latter of the group won the esteemed Pulitzer Prize.

Gershwin’s success on Broadway eventually led to calls from Hollywood movie studios. He moved out to California to do some film work. While out in Hollywood, he began complaining of headaches in early 1937. Sadly, during his work on a film entitled "The Goldwyn Follies," George Gershwin collapsed due to a malignant brain tumor. He later died following a surgery to remove the tumor on July 11, 1937.

Although his life was tragically cut short, George Gershwin’s legacy will always live on through his music. From timeless hits to musicals, his melodies still resonate in popular culture. His influence will be felt for decades to come.

Conclusions arrived at through thinking can be explained, argued and debated and have an emphasis on proof. This is the general approach taken to decision-making in business.

Awareness, on the other hand, is more of an internal "knowingness." It would be very difficult for most people, for example, to explain how they know where South America is. We simply accumulated all of the relevant data over a period of time and it is now easily available to us. It enables us to deal with problems in their entirety, giving us the capacity for spontaneous understanding. At the same time, this knowingness may be very difficult, or impossible to prove, but that does not make it less valid – quite the contrary.

Advances in awareness tend to come through revelation, allowing us to suddenly find we know the answer to a previously baffling problem. There is a word that sums this up – eureka – which is most famously attributed to the ancient Greek scholar Archimedes. He reportedly proclaimed "Eureka!" when he stepped into a bath and noticed that the water level rose, then suddenly understood that the volume of water displaced must be equal to the volume of the part of his body he had submerged. This meant that the volume of irregular objects could be calculated with precision, a previously intractable problem.

Unfortunately, many businesses tend to easily reject the kind of advances that come from awareness. The problem is that in any area where awareness is lacking it is literally impossible to comprehend the point of view, thinking or behaviours of someone with higher awareness. This it is beautifully conveyed by one of my favourite quotations, from Angela Monet:

"Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who could not hear the music."

Lacking the awareness of the music, which represents a more complete understanding of the total context, people of lower awareness are prone to condemn others whose behaviour is inconsistent with their own model of the world.

I wonder how often you have seen this happening in business? Probably a lot. In particular, if you are an innovator and creator, which is vital to great leadership, it is almost inevitably going to have been directed at you. It is also responsible for the still-birth of many great ideas because immediate rejection is the most common response to ideas that fall outside people’s understanding or awareness. They will then ridicule the source of those ideas, dissuading the originator from ever mentioning them again.

There are literally hundreds of examples throughout history that show this normal human trait up all too clearly, from Galileo being arrested for suggesting that the planets revolve around the sun, to the general public’s 5-year refusal to believe that the Wright brothers had achieved flight, to Marconi’s friends having him taken to a psychiatric hospital for proposing that radio would be possible. As Arthur Schopenhauer reminded us: "All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident."

In companies, such opposition, often politely phrased as, "playing devil’s advocate," cripples the primary source of innovation and growth: new ideas.

It is easy to recognise our own increasing awareness after it has happened. As we progress, we see things completely differently, recognising our previous thinking as limited, naive, short-sighted, or simply wrong. The critical thing to note, however, is that it was an increase in awareness that enabled this change in perspective. It then becomes clear that it is completely impossible to improve our choices or decision-making capabilities in any other way.

In this fast-changing world, probably the most valuable asset a business can develop is a culture of learning and growth. It enables the innovation necessary to beat the competition and the flexibility to respond to things happening in the external environment.

And for connectivity, there is Bluetooth v2 with A2DP support and it’s EDGE enabled for speedier net access.

Performance

Owing to its slim design, the phone is light and easy on the pocket. The keypad has great ergonomics but a big fingerprint magnet because of the glossy finish. Its display is crisp and making out the screen contents is no pain. Call quality is good and its reception is satisfactory though the loudspeaker volume could have been louder which makes the calls easy to miss in a noisy environment.

We really admire the inclusion of 3.5mm port for standard headphones.And the external music keys gave us better control over our tracks being played. The player is simple but there is a slight lag while browsing the music library or playing around with its settings. Soon, all were forgotten once we pumped up the volume. It sounds louder than the older Nokia 5700 XpressMusic which we tested last year. Both with dedicated audio chip, the 5310 stood out with its deep bass and clear vocals. The higher frequencies may be a bit harsh for some, but you can always tweak the EQ to your liking.

Browsing on the EDGE connection was average. Synching the phone with Nokia’s latest PC Suite was flawless, but transferring files to and from the PC using a data cable was way too slow albeit its USB 2.0 support.

The 2MP cameras has nothing much to talk about. Lack of auto focus, the absence of an LED flash and the slow image processing speed dampened our enthusiasm for the phone. Images lacked details and there is a lot of noise on indoor shots. The battery life is below average. It hardly lasted us for two days on normal usage.

Verdict

Its sleek design and great build is one thing, its exceptional sound is the main reason why one should go for the Nokia XpressMusic 5310. The so-so camera and poor battery life may be a deal breaker for some. If you’re willing to shell out more, the Sony Ericsson W880i is another good option having the similar slim profile.

Let’s start by my sight translation of the marketing materials. Its color reminds one of a low-intensity onion peel. Its aroma is delicate with subtle whiffs of small red fruits and vanilla. Enjoy this dry rose’s good acidity and fairly long finish. Suggested food pairings include stuffed mushrooms, braised ham, lobster stew, grilled salmon, grilled trout, and veal saute.

Before the first meal I sipped some of this wine. It was light, refreshing, and somewhat long. It was summer in a glass. This meal consisted of chicken meatballs slow cooked with soft wheat kernels. The wine tasted of grapefruit. It was feathery with nice acidity and did a great job of cutting the meat’s grease. In the presence of roasted eggplant with lots of garlic (as in Provence) the wine became rounder.

The second tasting involved a barbecued chicken breast, potatoes roasted in chicken fat, and green beans in a tomato sauce. The rose gave the impression of light cherries. It was softly acidic and nicely long. The word feathery popped up again. I had the feeling that there were some dark red grapes hiding in this wine. I was a little disappointed when the wine was flattened by fruit juice candy.

The final meal consisted of a red pepper and a Portobello mushroom omelet. The rose was sweet, light, refreshingly acidic, and not very fruity. When paired with a high-quality French lemon pie with a buttery crust the wine lost its sweetness. There was a note of citrus in the background but it was clearly overpowered.

The first cheese pairing was with a local Provolone. At first the cheese seemed to flatten the wine. Later it was nicely acidic, round, and light. With a marbled Cheddar the wine was definitely muted. But it did return to normal when I finished the cheese.

Final verdict. I would definitely buy this wine again. I have been reviewing a lot of $10 wines and this one is clearly in a different league. But as so often, it’s important not to waste it on inappropriate food pairings.

What about bamboo, wine, watermelon and chili peppers? The Bamboo Festival is presented at Zilker Botanical Gardens in late August every year and features "all things bamboo". There are at least two important wine festivals in the area: the Texas Hill Country Wine and Food Festival in early April and the Austin Wine Festival in late May. The Chili Pepper Fiesta is held in the town of Elgin, just east of Austin, on the second Saturday in September. The Luling Watermelon Thump in June garners national attention every year with its watermelon seed spitting contest.

First thing you will need is a Domain Name. A domain name is the www.domainname.com bit that can be seen at the top of a webpage. In the very early days of computers and networks, they need a way of identifying each computer. They started by using numbers known as IP (internet protocol) numbers. You normally pay yearly for hosting and it could be as little as £10 a year to over £100 per year. If you buy a domain from one company and hosting from another you will need to phone your domain company and have them point your domain at the address of your hosting space provided by your hosting company. This can get confusing so I will not go into it here, but if you want to save yourself some grief, but the domain and the hosting from the same company.

Right, so you have a Domain Name and you have Hosting so what is needed next? Well for one you will need one or more webpage’s to put up. Let’s say for that you have a website built by someone and you have all the files in a folder on your computer. Well, you will need a way to transfer them to your server space (hosting space). When you signed up for you hosting you will have received some hosting access settings, probably named FTP settings. Now FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and you will need the FTP settings to access your server space. These settings should have come with a username and a password. An FTP client is a piece of software that’s sole job is to connect to server (hosting) space and upload and download webpages. I would recommend FTP Surfer but there are plenty of others and all completely free. You just need to download one and create a profile and add the settings.

If you built your website yourself using some kind of software there should be a way to add these FTP settings to the publish area of software. Some work better than others. Now if you have uploaded your files and you can see them all in your directory in your own server space on your domain but cannot see them when you type www.mydomain.com into a browser what is wrong? If you have the home page called index then you have probably uploaded them to the wrong directory. Check the details that were sent to you when you set the hosting account up as you were probably told what folder to publish the files in. It could be something like public_html or mywebsite_html. There may be a few folders in your hosting account so it’s important to know which one you need to publish your files too. If you’r sure your files are in the right folder but the site is still not coming up call your hosting company up for assistance. It will probably be something very simple. Once you have done it right you will be well on your way. It’s just the first time that will seem strange and unknown. Web developers are using FTP all the time to publish websites and it becomes second nature to them. As it will you once you have done it a couple of times.

If you managed all of the above but can’t find your website through the search engines don’t go ringing up your web hosting company or web Development Company as it is not their fault.
